Is this a cavity wall under the tiles?
We have a similar age home that has 2 "pillars" at each side of the house with windows set back between these pillars .
We had a pebble dash inset from the ridge (gable of house is front facing ) down to above the living room window. It's now rendered .
When we had cavity wall insulation done ( after a lot of huffing and puffing ) they told us the 2 pillars took a heck of a lot of filling.
Thinking about it now I'm assuming that we have a deeper cavity on the pillars and a standard cavity depth where the pebble dash is , hence why we have a regular depth window sill inside and the window appears set back a long way.
With the tiled inset in the first photo there doesn't appear to be the same extra depth at the side of the windows
