Is this a chimney cowl or a pot to be laid in mortar?

I now have a wood burner and need to replace the existing gas cowl (see in second pic, quite black now)

I bought the new one quite cheaply off e-bay, the outer diameter of the lower spigot is 8". I am concerned that it would be unstable if fitted on top of the chimney pot and wondered if it is designed to be bedded in mortar, rather than as a retro-fit cowl? Another option would be to simply remove the gas cowl and leave the chimney pot as built. Any opinions appreciated.[/img]
