This bush has grown alongside the apple tree since before we moved into our house 4 years ago - lately it has grown vertically up the fence but at the back as you can see in the photo it's thinned out whereas before there used to be a lot of leaves

I trimmed the top of it earlier today to try and encourage it to grow out rather than up but fear I may have over done it and I noticed a lot of the wood appears very dry and possibly dead

Will it come back or is it dead?

Im not sure, but the shed that's being eaten by the tree looks as if it's had it.

It could be frost damage, leave it alone and see how it goes. If that bit doesn't recover just prune it out.

I see so many plants like that on my travels: planted too close to a fence with no regard for future growth. Choosing the right plant for a certain spot is essential to know how large it will grow.

And don't plant trees next to your tool shed

I am not sure why you think that from that picture. It looks to me like there are several metres between the tree and the shed. And the OP didn't plant it anyway!

Now I've looked closer I believe that you are right.

I would never have a tree like that in a garden, had a large pear tree, got it chopped.

Yeah, the shed is set further back in the garden, away from the tree - we moved it there from the other side of the garden.

We had no involvement in the tree proximity to the fence, according to local history it is one of the last or only surviving apple trees of an orchard that used to be where our house is. We like it, however I'm forever picking apples off the floor when it blossoms - the one's that we do pick and offer to the neighbours and locals are pretty nice cooked up for a crumble
