Is undercoat needed?

Hi folks,I'm just about to have my house painted.The living room is cream and red.On the red should a white undercoat be applied before applying the new colour(dark grey)because it is fairly dark?

It comes down to personal opinion this one, personally i go an extra coat of the finish paint rather than a white obliterating coat, only advantage i can see is price per coat, it may be cheaper to use white if your using an expensive emulsion. Dark grey will obliterate red quite well anyway

Dark grey would cover over red much better then white as said
