No its bloody not. its not even Halloween yet. Still in the diy sheds im greeted by the dulcit crap tunes of christmas played out over stylaphone type displays. Even on the telly were greeted with adverts of snow falling, while we have a mini heatwave, urging us to rush out and buy for christmas. Last night saw an advert from wh smiths, get these books for christmas, snow falling in the background.....offer ends 31/10/05! Can we not keep christmas special!

christmas is all about shops sellin overpriced presents and makin as much money as they can. its not about birth of santa anymore.

First allocation of christmas goods in our shops started in september. Yes, SEPTEMBER. The fact is more and more people do their xmas shopping early! Even small local shops like ours get a full range of christmas confectionery, food and treats. We have to take advantage of people doing their shopping early, generating sales. On average, normal daily sales double on Christmas eve  and during December, sales gradually increase to the 24th. Sales are also up for the week between Christmas and New year, people buying batteries for toys and booze!

Bit of insider info for you there!

Too right! I've heard tell that the local sainsburys turn over a million quid A DAY around christmas time. Blimey! I'm in the wrong line of work, I'm lucky to turn over £1 a day round christmas time!

wondered how long it would take someone to notice.

For you're education about St Nicholas (patron of little children, giver of gifts, celebrated in the 'Low-lands' on the eve of 6th December, and not commercialised into Christmas)

Well, I never.......
buy X-mas presents for anyone. We're not used to this 'custom' and never will.
It's like 'Mothersday' and 'Fathersday': commercial inventions of retailers to have us part with our hard earned money (yes, I'm a retailer myself, but never 'join' in this cr** with special seasonal offers).

did you know in fact that X-mas is a 'pagan' fest 'christened' (Kerstend) in the middle ages for the benefit of the Church? Course you do :D

Well, we still haven't celebrated Samhain yet (Pagan New Year... apparently some folk call it "Halloween" )

Being from a teaching family, my parents were always wound up by the "back-to-school" stuff that comes out around June

Wood, a little Dutchgirl I used to know told me they got great big chocolate letters for St Nick's... the first letter of the person's name. Is that a general tradition or was she just from a weird bit of the Netherlands (the 'nether region' perhaps? )

Of course, it could be worse... Imagine being a Jehova's witness: they aren't even allowed to celebrate birthdays!!!

That's a real big tradition in the whole of The Netherlands (and a big money maker for the chocolate industry!)
They come in various seizes and prices: from cheap and awfull tasting, to milk or white big letter to very expensives ones with creamy filling.

Some letters always run out very early (obviously the letter of my first name included ;-(
