I am trying to replace a two gang switch with a new one. One switch controls the hall light and the second controls the landing light. At the top of the stairs there is another 2 gang switch that also controls the landing light and the bathroom light (I've looked at this one carefully but it is wired differently with an extra red wire and one of the black wires going into the 'C' terminals)

Coming back to the downstairs switch, there are two leads coming out of the wall- both with a red and black wire and an earth wire (these are earthed into the mounting box).

There is a short red wire that was connecting the two 'C' terminals together in the old switch and so I've done the same in the new switch.

I've tried wiring them up but i can't get both lights to work at the same time.

I normally take a picture of the layout before I take the wires out but because I've changed other light switches with no probs I was a bit careless. I've tried to give as much info as I can. With the two 'C' terminals out of the equation, there are 4 wires and four terminals- Help please!

I just posted my problem and it brought up a few similar posts (I'd like to say in my defence that I had looked for other similar posts, I'd looked at the sticky and at the how to pages). Having brought up one post that I hadn't looked at, I had a peek and immediately found my answer there!

Thanks very much to Lectrician, whose advice to sharonmarie in September last year was just what I needed. You should put that photo and diagram into the sticky!!
