Jave is mainly used on a PC for certain web sites that have applets built in. There is no real purpose in removing it.

Some people see it as a threat as it's a scripting tool, you can set your security settings to stop it running on sites unless you spec it.

Every time a java update is installed, the old version of the runtime is left behind. Therefore you can in fact remove all but the highest numbered version to save some disk space...
