Hi everyone,
First post here although I have been lurking for some time.
We are extending a 1960s bungalow and increasing the size of the rooms. This means the existing outer (cavity) wall will be demolished and replaced by a new wall outside the existing building.
A hedge alongside means deeper then usual footings and block and beam floors are necessary in the new section. There are two aspects to this that are of concern.
The first is that (I assume) the existing floors are about 4" concrete on about 4-6" hardcore. This means that the insulation I will be putting on top of the block floor will abut the hardcore of the old floor. Anybody have any suggestions about the best way of acheiving this?
The second issue is that the beams will need to be set lower than the top of the concrete of the existing footings, by about 75mm. Is it possible to use joist hangers with these beams or would I have to build a new sleeper wall to support the ends of the beams?
