Hi

I am currently converting my concrete fabricated garage into a man cave and want to use the roof space for storage, The Span is 3.4m so I think I will need to use 2x8's but the problem is I would have to cut a large triangle section out the joist were it sits on the support walls I have attached a drawing of exactly what would need to be cut out to see if any you knowledgeable people can help me out and let me know if it would be ok or not.

Thank you in advance for any replies

Plaster board 0.09 kn/m2
chipboard flooring 0.12 kn/m2
15kg of storage per m2 0.2 kn/m2
person 0.90 kn/m2

I'm not sure if I'm calculating the load correctly but this is what I have came up with

thank you
Craig

Surely you meant to write 2" x 7"s?

Lose those two top plates and just have the one internal plate.

Hi noseall
The single top plate is part of the original garage roof so can’t be removed I just doubled up the top plates on my stud wall cause I thought this would be stronger is this overkill?

Thank you
Craig

Ah, gotcha. No not overkill. We always do the same on dormer cheeks.

If your drawing is accurate you won't have an issue with what you propose.
