I am taking out the ceiling & 1st floor in an 1820's cottage and want to know what size joists I need to use and also the frequency that they would need to be placed to replace the old creaking beams!

The span is 4.6mtrs wide.

Cheers Lads, with regards to losing headroom the upstairs ceilings are 8' high so losing a couple of inches off those shouldn't be a problem, as long as downstairs doesn't get lower!
