Just a general query about coolant

Just a general query, does the coolant in the expansion tank tend to just sit there, or does it circulate with the rest of the coolant?

it mostly sits there, but every time the engine heats up and cools down, some water travels out of the engine into the expansion, and back again, so over time it mixes.
