There is a rule of thumb or more a guesstimation for working out the total span a length of joist can run before it needs additional support "i.e in the middle" it goes something like the width times the thickness = allowable span, but I can't for the life of me remember how to form the calculation, could you help me out please, cheers.

Used to be half the length plus one equals the depth of the joist in imperial.
eg Width of span 12 ft, divide by 2 = 6 plus one = 7.
Depth of joist therefore 7 inch

half the span in feet, then apply the number to inches, then add 1 inch.

i.e a 10 foot room becomes 5 foot, which then becomes 5 inches, add 1 inch and you have the number.

6" x 2" joists. ;)

or another way is to....

halve the depth of the joist in inches and you get the span of the joist in metres.
i.e. a 9" joist will span 4.5 metres whereas a 3.5m span will require 7" joists. ;)

i would base all these on 400mm centres.
