Hi all,
Not too sure if I should of posted this in the Alarms section or here and I am aware that I cant put it in the Gas section.
I have a Kidde CO2 Alarm that I have purchased and after reading the instructions it states about installing on to a wall or standing up on a table but no mention of it being mounted on a ceiling.
It does not state that it cant be mounted on a ceiling but wanted advice on if there is a reason for this and can this be done or is it a big no no.
Jase.

I think you mean a CO alarm (Carbon MONOXIDE) rather than CO2 (Carbon Dioxide)

Read the MI's it is unusuall to put a CO detector on the ceiling, they usually go high on the wall in the bit between the tops of the doors/windows and the ceiling, there is usually a recommended distance from ceilings and gas appliances so you need to take 5, sit down and read the instrcutions! ;)

Thanks for your reply Boileman.
Yes I did mean CO instaed of CO2. Silly me!!
I have read through the instructions hence why I asked the question on here.
Under the section of where to install it states locate at least but no closer than 2 metres from all fuel burning appliances.
Do not place near fresh air vents or close to doors and windows that open to the outside.
Do not install in dead air spaces such as peaks of vaulted ceilings or gabled roofs which mine are not.
It does recommend that placing at eye level allows for optimum monitoring of the red and green indicator lights but I read this as just an easier way of seeing the lights rather then the best position for the detection of CO.
There is no mention of distances from ceilings other then the 2 metres that I have mentioned. Should this be in the instructions?
I think what made me think that these could be mounted on the ceiling was the combined smoke and CO detection units that are available as you would have these on your ceiling as all smoke detectors are installed this way or am I wrong?
The ideal place as you mentioned would be above my internal doors but I have glass above mine so I cant put them there.

I don`t think I`ve ever seen a CO detector fitted on a ceiling before.
The instructions usually say"fit on wall between 1.5m/2m high and 1.5m/2m away from appliance",or something similar.
I always try if possible to have them fitted on opposite wall to the appliance(depending on room size) and at around about head height or 6inches above a light switch.
Most people don`t want them stuck on the middle of a wall cos they`re bloody ugly things.
The 1st manufacturer to make one which looks like an ornament or a wall hanging of some sort could make a fortune.

These are fitted to a wall so that air convection currents (complete with nasty gases, maybe) actually rise through the detector so that it can respond quickly.
Smoke alarms are fine on the ceiling because any particles of combustion will find themselves there due to the heat which is developing.....and yes I do need to get out more :p
John :)

Many thanks all for your replies.
I have seen some digital types on the market. They look a bit like room stats so I may research 1 of these.
Although there is no comparrison to just cos it doesnt look nice to saving a life!

CO alarms are quite often fitted to the ceiling in new builds, frequently in the wrong place in kitchens. Kidde do a hard wired combined alarm.
If you read the US fitting instructions ceiling mounting is mentioned.

Ceiling fitting, generally in the UK should be fitted at least 300mm from walls or light fittings and 1-3m from appliance.

Check out Aico or Honeywell
