Killing/ removing couch from lawn?

I have a small well cared for lawn only a couple of seasons old but am starting to get some shoots of couch (or similar coarse grass) appearing. I am just pulling it out by hand at the minute as its only single shoots or 3/4 shoot clumps but i wan't to totally get rid of it before it turns into big clumps.

anyone had any sucessful ways to banish it other than pulling it out?

only way is to dig it out or carefully spray with a systemic weedkiller
