Hi all,

I want to place my kitchen hob on an island. Thinking of building a bulkhead above to house a fan or may choose a hood ...just not sure of the "look" of that as yet. However in either case if I want to duct the air out then I am going to have to run the pipe above the ceiling in between the joists. (They do run the correct way). I believe there is enough dept to do this.... However I live in a chalet bungalow so my roof comes down where the pipe would exit to the outside... not investigated fully yet but appears my options would possibly be up via the roof tiles (or out through the soffit or fascia board.... hope that makes sense. Has anyone done similar? or any suggestions as to what is best would be useful. Picture of the outside. The old vent cover is where current system exits.... this is just lying on top of the current kitchen cupboards so the new duct would obviously be higher and exiting somewhere above the current kitchen window. Trying to gain ideas as likely to have new fasica and soffit installed before the kitchen is done. The distance it would have to run is about 3 metres.

Boxing day dinner-10 people. I witnessed my brother's island hob working with the Miele downdraft extractor- no pop ups required. It really was impressive. Bora is the more expensive option, no idea if it is better than the Miele version though. They can either be ducted below the floor or run in to a container (which needs to be emptied from time to time).

Duct in the ceiling, vent via the soffit.
Just ensure it's the aluminium duct, and not that flimsy plastic junk that's intended for bathrooms.

The only place I have bought plastic ducting is from TLC and it is far from flimsy or do you mean the flexible stuff.

Nothing wrong with the correct size plastic ducting. I have not seen any aluminium ducting apart from the corrugated stuff which you really do not want to use. The metal stuff I have seen is galvanised.

More details required if you are attempting to offer usefull advice. This is not flimsy plastic junk:

additionally it has less condensation issues than equivalent metal.

Thank you .... great useful information... Will take a look at the hob with downdraft extractor but my kitchen appliance shop did not recommend them (even though they sell some.). Was going to use round pipe as been advised less issues with condensation and water pooling and that it keeps going to the exit!
