Hi All,

My first post here so please be gentle!!

Recently I had my kitchen spruced up. This involved a bit of building work to put some steel into 2 load bearing walls. The builder subbed the job out to two kids who have basically left quite a few problems and I need some advice.

1 - on one of the walls it looks like they have plastered over the old wallpaper. Presumably when the paste on the wallpaper eventually fails, so the plaster will falls also. Is this the case?

2 - They were supposed to level out a lump in the floor but there is still a noticable lump. What would I have to do to put tiles onto a floor which is somewhat uneven?

There are other issues but these are the main ones. The builder was supposed to have a really good reputation, but the people he subbed it to have done a rubbish job. Unfortunately I have already paid him for it.

Sorry but why would you fully pay someone for doing work until you were 100% happy. I'm not saying point blank refuse to pay, but holding some sort of retention would keep him interested in getting the job done properly.

Also, did he inform you he was planning on subbing the job out? Fair enough if he's had to do it, but to not tell you stinks.

These are not the hallmarks of a builder with a good reputation.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing!

Yes I know. An expensive lesson. The plastering thing only came to light when I took the front off the light switch to paint the wall and I could clearly see the wallpaper. I'm just concerned that this will eventually fail - but not being too great in all things DIY related I need to know what the likely outcome is. He can say that it will all be fine and I don't know any difference

ive seen the wallpaper thing round the lightswitch so many times.usually the labourers stripping the walls dont hang the switch off to strip that little bit.

this may be wrong in your case but dont worry to much.

have a chat to him about the other defects.if he subbed it out he may well have been to busy to do it himself and may not have snagged it properly.

you never know he may well have held a bit back from the subbies for a month or something, its not uncommon,so there my be money available.

fair do's give him a chance,i bet he wont want his reputation ruined by a couple of muppets,so dont steam in with the riot act just yet
