Daughter has developed a bad sewage type smell in the kitchen. I've replaced all the sink drain plumbing, but the smell is still there. This weekend I spotted a hole in the cast iron soil stack (as shown approx on image) behind the pipe next to the wall. On inspection this was the same smell and there were a couple of chunks that were loose which I have removed. Obviously the stack will need replacing at some point, but my question really is could this be the source of the smell? How would it get from here through the wall and into the kitchen? The smell does not seem to be anywhere else in the house.

The soil/vent pipe termination is too close to the windows. I can't see whether the vent pipe is open or has a durgo on the top. I suspect that smell is coming in the window.
Other possibilities are that the sink overflow is sludged up and smelly or that the trap is getting pulled when the sink empties or washing machine or dishwasher pumps out.

The top of the pipe is damaged too (and open) so may have been higher, but the smell is not upstairs only in the kitchen. I changed the p trap and outlet pipe under the sink but not the sink plug unit or overflow. No dishwasher and the washing machine has a separate outlet.

I'm only there at the weekend so can't post photos till Saturday but I replaced a shallow p trap with a new deeper p trap and all new outlet pipes.

Actually, the p trap is missing here, but this was the set up, replaced all but the black outlet from the sink. Pipe runs straight outside and to the drain cover.

It may be the angle and perspective but the waste pipe looks narrow. It should be 40mm but if its 32mm and there was only a shallow trap its possible that the trap was being pulled by self siphonage when the sink empties.

The break in the soil stack is kind of mid Way between the door and the window though and wondered if it could flow in via the vent above the door. Daughter has been in here since February and smell only started a couple of weeks ago.

The sink starts at 40 but steps down to 32 for the outlet pipe. Replaced it all a week ago and the smell is still there. Seems to be worse when first going in.

Temporary repair to the soil stack with duct tape until it can be repaired or replaced should rule it in or out as the problem.
My money would be on the trap being pulled though. Reducing from 40mm to 32mm is very likely to cause suction on the water in the trap. You could try an anti vac trap but, ideally, the waste pipe needs upsizing.

Do you have suspended floors anywhere? Is there a possibility of drainage leakage getting in and sitting under the floor?

This is my fear..all suspended floors. Not lifted the kitchen floor yet as was trying to cover any other possibilities first.

With an external soil stack and sink waste going out through the wall into a gulley, I'd be very surprised if there was an issue under the kitchen floor.
