high gloss splash back... can it be used behind hob?

Hi,

I've certainly seen some being used behind the hob. Doesn't really answer your question though, as I am not sure if they are ok to use there

While we're on the subject, I have just been given some toughened glass, about 4mm thick 780x620mm, I was thinking of using it as a splashback behind our soon to be installed hob, and tiling around the edges.
The glass is frosted, but you can still see through it. How best to fix it to wall, and what colour to paint the plaster behind it?

I know this is carpentry but there are plenty of experienced kitchen fitters in here who might have done this before.

(Apologies if this is a hijack or in the wrong forum)
