I have a 3m length of surface which will protrude about 8" beyond the end of the unit. I wanted to cut it to a nice shape and to have shelves under it.
But, given it is a roll top, what kind of shape is best.
There would be problems with a radius and the roll top I think.
Or three angled straight cuts near to the 8" R
Any ideas

This seem to be the most popular and you should have iron on edging strip to cover it as well. If the top worktop surface is a laminated type you can buy a downward teeth blade for jig-saw for a clean cut on top but need extra pressure on jig-saw to prevent kickback and when finish cutting, wait until the blade stop rotating before taking it out. Just take your time cutting it and let the blade do the cutting otherwise blade will bend outward as mention above. A straight timber with cramp will guide the jig-saw straight as well. I also put masking tape underneath the jig-saw body plate to protect the worktop from marking.

Thanks.
It is a chipboard surface with laminated top. I have got the iron on edging strip so I'm ok there.
I thought I might be able to make the cuts with a circular saw, which would be better than a jigsaw.
Your comments about masking tape are sensible.

You can but score the laminate top with a stanley knife for a clean cut.
