We are currently doing up a whole house as complete diy newbies too!

The living room dining room is all open and through a arched door way is the kitchen. Previous owners have bricked the arch way and even without not liking the look we have 2 young children, one who hasn't started walking (which means falling!)
Bricks and tumbling toddlers don't mix.

Something was said about steal above but that's all I know.. What's our best option? Thanks.

Any door or window opening should have a lintel (made of either rolled steel joist or joists or re-enforced concrete) above the opening to support the weight of the wall above - even if that weight is only 3 or 4 courses of brickwork. Older houses (i.e. pre-WWI) may well have self-supporting brick arches, but they aren't commonly seen indoors on domestic properties. If your house is modern the arch may even be formed from plywood or timber clad with plasterboard with a lintel somewhere in the wall above

What is the question,
a is the structure sound as you show in the picuture - Yes it is arched brickwork is how the ancient people did it, whole cathedrals are build by this structure
b or do you want to take it out and is your question if there is a lintel above it - that i cannot tell you
