We are looking into gettting our hall way done with lamitate floor and have had a couple of quotes to get the work done.

The problem is, is that we have "bull nose" stairs and both fitters so far have said that the will just butt the floor upto the vertical edge of the step.

To be this doesn;t sound very good as we are going to the trouble of have the skirting removed etc to get a neat finish.

What other methods can be used when fitting a laminate floor in this manner?

what I do is use an angle grinder with a wood cutting blade take about 10mm out of the bottom of the step.
then cut a profile and slide the laminate under.

or what I done for a lady who had a concrete step was use PVC moulding to conceal the expansion gap. stick it on with "no nails" or "mastic".

I did mention to the fitter about cutting a slot underneath the step but he said he wouldn't be happy as it would weaken the stairs

It looks like I may end up doing this job myself, so thanks for advice.

Just out of interest is there a special tool for cuttting door frames etc or do you just use an angle grinder?

got to be carefull at 10mm youve either cut right though or very close

risers can be as little as9mm upwards[have seen thinner but not recomended]
i would never ever recomend removing more than 40% thickness

if the the floor is properly acclimatised you can get away with less expansion/contraction at the riser
what is the floor distance from the rise to the nearest parralel wall!!!

should have asked the distance from step in the opposite direction as well ;)

expansion tends to happen from near zero at the centre of the area to maximum at the edges

so assuming your total hall is about 4.5m that puts the the riser about 1m from the centre
so i would say a gap off 3mm will be sufficient for expansion

This might sound a little bit stupid but could you not get your laminate laid and then get the carpet from the stairs to overlap?

We've got very strange stairs that are rounded off at the bottom  . Hubby cut the laminate to fit and then we got the carpet fitters to overlap the laminate with carpet. (To hide where the laminate is butted up to it).
