My laptop PC has given up the ghost and refuses to power on. When I press the power button the power indicator illuminates as does the Wifi indicator but that is it, the hard disk does not power up, no screen etc so I am thinking it is a problem with an internal power supply. It is a Philips Freevents X51, I wouldn't mind another stick of ram put in it too. Any recommendations for repair companies? - there's loads on google but you never know who to trust.

Crucial seem to have the best reputation. You can go direct to them here or use dabs
here who do crucial memory and slightly cheaper.

I might order some myself soon so I would be interested to hear how you get on. Good luck with the repairs in anycase. ;)

I had the exactly the same issue the other day on a HP lapper. It turned out to be a faulty RAM stick. If you are OK to do this, try removing the following parts from the laptop and see if it boots with main power connected:

- Battery
- All RAM. (Don't know the specific laptop but some have two slots - one underneath and one under the keyboard - or other locations)
- HD
- CDROM/DVD drive
- Wireless card (maybe accessible - will usually have a cable connecting to it for the aerial)
- Bluetooth module

If it does boot - you may get post beeps as you have no RAM installed. Then one-by-one, install each device until it stops you will have then found the problem.

We have recently started using a company called Main Computer Services which offer a laptop repair service. They hold the website: http://www.laptopsrepair.co.uk. They will pick up the laptop and send it back for a fee of £25. Free quoting. The will provide a nice pink box (from the courier) if you don't have one. They will provide a quick estimate over the phone, if you know the exact problem, otherwise you will have to sent it into them. We have used them 3 times since the new year and they seem to be quite good!

Tip I always give. If you can, remove the HD from the laptop before it goes away. Let them know it is missing. If you can remove it, make sure all your data is backed up - I know it will be a bit difficult if its dead though :)

Cheers

Thankfully the only important piece of software which I stand to lose is the onboard diagnostic car software, which I am pretty sure I can sweet-talk gendan into letting me download & install again :D .
I'll have a bit of a play about with the laptop and see if it is something along the lines of what you say, and have a look at that company. Cheers
