I have a Sony Vaio laptop that seems fine when in use but if you move the screen or pull it down I get pink lines and patterns over it.

If you open it up it looks ok until you move it again.

Most likely cause is the conductors in the data cable between motherboard and screen starting to break down, and making/breaking contract when you flex the cable by changing the lid position.

Spare cables are available, but:

1. They're expensive on any laptop;
2. It's very hard to get them for Sony VAIO laptops.

I can't remember on these whether or not it's a ribbon cable - if so then you're screwed; if not then you might find someone who's prepared to do some fiddly work in repairing the tiny conductors. I have a couple of dead VAIOs in the office somewhere - I'll have a look later and see what shape they're in.

What model do you have?

Hi Softus,

It's a VGN - A295HP WITH 15.4 Wide Screen

Thanks

If you do not feel confident in repairing yourself, we use a company called Teleplan for all our 'out of warranty' laptop repairs. Google for 'Teleplan Colchester' for contact info.

They do free quoting, but charge P&P of £20 for both ways. I have only ever know them change £45 labour + parts - which is very good. I have never had a problem with them in the 25+ times I have used them over 4 years. Their parts costs are usually very reasonable.

Hope this helps!

Worth adding for ease of mind, Teleplan do warranty repairs for major manufacturers, HP etc. never had a problem with them.
