Are large format tiles too heavy for plastered plasterboard?
I’m planning to install 600 x 1200 x 8 mm tiles in my bathroom. They weigh approx. 15kg per tile. I’ve already used tile backer board on one half of the bathroom after removing some existing tiles, which also removed the underlying plasterboard.
The other half of the bathroom has painted walls, and I’m unsure whether I need to remove the plasterboard and replace it with tile backer board before tiling. Could you advise on whether the plastered plasterboard can support the weight of these large tiles, or if backer board is necessary for the painted walls as well?
