Hi there,

I didn't know where to post, so I posted here. I recently removed some old sealant caulking from between my counter tops and my kitchen wall due to nasty yellowing and cracks (The previous home owners were brutal...)

After I removed the sealing, there is now a good half inch gap. It's as if they used some of rubber seal below the caulking. Is there a name for this? I can't use normal sealant yet because the gap is too big.

Any ideas what to use?

If this is a prefab plastic laminate counter top, then there will be a "lip" along the top edge of the short backsplash that needs to be cut to fit the contour of the wall. That lip is about 1/2 inch wide so that it can accomodate up to that much curvature in the wall.

Is it possible that the previous owners installed that countertop WITHOUT scribing and cutting that backsplash lip to fit snuggly against the wall?

The stuff they stuck into that gap was probably something called "foam backer rod" and any place listed under "Caulking Materials & Supplies" in your Yellow Pages phone directory will know where you can buy it locally.
