Probably vine weevils on the laurel. Lay out sheets of newpaper around the plant and shake them off after dark. Or spray with Provado.
Sunflowers are best sown striaght in the soil. Indoors, they'll stretch towards the light so keep turning them. You'll have to harden them off by acclimatising them to outdoor conditions before planting out - put the pots out in a sheltered spot during the day and bring them in at night until all risk of frost has passed. They need support - tie them carefully to canes as they grow. When you harden them off and plant them out, protect from slugs.
