I can do foam-back but never tried to do woven on grippers. Which type do you want to fit?

If its a simple box shaped spare room your putting it in then its fairly simple. Personally, i would always get someone in, for what they charge its not worth the risk of making that wrong cut

Cutting around toilets his hard. But otherwise laying carpet is easy, both foam backed and hessian, just take your time, you can buy kickers from b&q for around £20.

trouble with kickers you need to know how to use one / get it right, get a carpet fitter in, nicer job and no worries

Breezer advised:
get a carpet fitter in
Surely this is a DIY forum where people ask for advice how to do jobs? I can fit foam-back and cushion-floor as good as anyone, and even better than some I've seen. I taught myself and enjoy learning new skills. Isn't that what it's all about?

yes, but that's YOU, if in doubt get a professional

you are more than welcome to post as you wish, but to some xyz is easy, to others not
the problem is (as with many posts) we get very little information, but yet are expected to give a concise reply.

origonal question was
how hard is it to lay a carpet? I have never laid one before.

I could have said "easy" but what use would that of been?

would you like to post how to fit a carpet? be my guest (no joke)

we could ask how big is room, type of carpet etc, but by the time all have been answered quicker to get some one in.

the above is just my opinion

I agree with some of that breezer and my first post did ask what type of carpet. If woven on grippers then I can't help as I've never done any, but if I wanted to then I may ask for some tips on here because I would certainly have a go. You say it would be quicker to get someone in to do it and I'm sure that's true but speed isn't always the priority. Sometimes people enjoy doing the job themself, or money is a bit tight and every penny counts.
If Heather wants some advice on fitting foam-back then I'll have a go at explaining how I do it, although in this case it would be easier to show someone rather than explain it. Some jobs are easier to 'show' how rather than 'explain' how.

I would be laying foam back... can I lay this on grippers?
No, use glue aerosol can for carpet as it's very quick drying. Carpet shop should have them.

Unlike many jobs you can't hide or repair mistakes very easily with carpet.

I had a professional carpet fitter do my hall stairs and landing last year. He cut the part near the front door 10 inches short. Ordered another piece and it was a different shade. They couldn't match it and ended up replacing the lot at over £300.

I know we sometimes enjoy either the work or saving the money. But they charge so little I don't think it's worth it. Especially if the above happens.

Plus they are so quick, what takes them an hour takes me all day and it never looks as good.

I am getting a pro in to do the hallway and stairs, but I would like to do the living room and bedroom.

They are tiny rooms.

Try the smallest/cheapest first and see how you go on it's not that hard.

Whatever you do though get a pair of knee pads it really burns you otherwise.

if your getting a fitter in to do some rooms

ask him how much beer money it would require to either show you how to do the job or actualy do the other rooms he will do it in no time ;) ;)
