I am about to put down some flooring in my kitchen/diner. the existing floor is floorboards which are quite sturdy. On the instructions for the flooring it says to put plywood down first, however a joiner cam round and said we dont have to, you can buy some decent quality underlay and that will do just as good a job. Is this true, i am not sure. cheers

if the floor is solid and level [within a mm or two]then i would agree that underlay is perfect
 buuuuuut

without laying and using according to instructions may seriously effect any garentee

Depend really on the direction of the existing floorboards and the direction of the new boards.
If the same: definitely use some plywood first.
