Laying laminate flooring

We would like to lay laminate flooring in the living room in our new house. It currently has carpet, and underneath that there is old laminate. Is it best to rip the old laminate out first? What is the best type of underlay to use? How long do you think it would take to do a room that is about 5m x 3.5m? We're hoping to do it before we move in next week, but not sure if we're being over ambitious! We're pretty handy at DIY, but haven't laid flooring before, so this is all new to us. Many thanks

Take up everything down to the T&G, ply or concrete sub-floor.

You can remove the skirtings and go under them - or lay laminate up to them and cover with quadrant, it looks awful.

The job can be done in a day.

Use the laminate Mfr's recom underlay.

Buy a laminate with the uni click system. A lot easier to fit.

Like quick step classic.

Underlay there are a lot about depending what your subfloor is. I use timber tech 2 gold most of the time which is a high end one

Thanks. We are planning to get Quickstep laminate. Just looked that underlay up - it looks great. We're not sure what the subfloor is until we take up the old laminate, but I'm guessing it will be concrete. If the old laminate is glued done, rather then a uni click system, will it be more difficult to take up?

Laminate is not glued down has to float on the underlay, should be 1/2 a days work for the novice.
