laying self adhesive vinyl tiles onto bare chipboard

I want to lay self adhesive vinyl floor tiles onto bare chipboard in my workshop and want to know if I can do this direct or if it is better to seal the chipboard with PVA or varnish beforehand. I read somewhere that its not good to lay onto chipboard, anyone know if this is the case and if so why or would be OK.
