laying solid wood floor

hi i am about to start laying my solid wood floor directly on to the joists.

i have had 2 differing bits of advise
1. put some polythene down first
2 buy some plywood and put that down first
there is about a foot gap below the joists and then concrete. Do you reckon i can just put polythene down and that will be ok?
