As the sales are in full swing, I am considering a 32"+ TV, but as there is so much technical jargon supporting each type, I would appreciate any feedback of pros and cons from current experiences.

I am an avid sports fan so a sharp picture for those fast moving action shots is a must.

Which way should I go??

Merry Xmas.

i heard someone calling plasma a "stop-gap" until LCD technology takes hold and sizes get bigger. We have a plasma screen and it produces very sharp pictures, we were watching the railway children on it yesterday, and i was quite amazed at the sharpness for a 70's (i think) film! (OOI, its on offer at Currys, Hitachi one £1299)

Doug99 weve touched on this subject a few times so might be worth trying the search button, I personally I think LCD is by far the best but Hey! Ho!

I would go for an LCD, I don't think plasma's will be around for much longer. Then again, if LEP technology ever materialises, then LCD's days are probably numbered as well.

No if's Eddie, Plilips have successfully demonstrated the technology works on the small scale for colour, and the bigger scale for Monochrome. There was a piece on TV recently where a Philips spokeman said they hope to have LEP screens available for mobile devices by the last quarter of 2006, and they predict these sceens will be comparable or better than current LCD/LED and Plasma models...

Lets see if they are right...

If you go along to your local electronics emporium, take a look at the back of the LCDs and at the back of the plasmas. I have noticed that plasma screens have a LOT of fans on the back. Reason? Greater energy dissipation. You won't hear these in a noisy warehouse full of muzak and screaming kids, but you can't guarantee you won't hear them in a quiet passage of the latest suspense thriller you buy on DVD, or during a snooker game (quiet please, ladies and gentlemen ;) )

A few years ago, plasmas had the edge on LCDs in terms of picture quality, but looking at the latest LCD screens the picture is just as good now. Plasma TVs get a bad rap for the life of the screen, but to be honest a decent plasma TV will now last just as long as your cathode ray-tube TV: it's not really an issue anymore.

Go into your local Currys, Comet or what-have-you. Take a look at the picture on an HD-Ready screen showing a high-definition video, and compare it to the large screens showing a standard-definition picture. It will blow you away! :D

If I were you, the things you should be checking are:

1) Is it a high-definition screen?
and
2) Does it have a HDCP-compatible HDMI connector? (this is necessary for use with high-definition TV services: it MUST be HDCP-compatible)

Sky, Telewest and ntl all have high-definition TV services in the pipeline (already available in some areas). If you are an avid sports fan, high-definition is a definite must.

The other factors, picture quality and value-for-money, I think you would do best to see the screens "in person". It is very much personal taste, and in my experience the most expensive screen doesn't always have the best picture!

To actually answer your question though (I got to it in the end!) I would advise you to go for LCD over plasma.

Weight (I believe LCDs are lighter, therefore your mounting options are greater)
Heat production/energy efficiency (and therefore fan noise)
Picture quality (LCD is at least as good as plasma now)
Screen life (possibly)

Thanks everyone for your comments. I have just been viewing a few of the large LCDs - I may just wait a little longer and see what the prices do as they seem to be coming down all the time.

I know the technology works, I saw a Japanese prototype about 6 or 7 years ago. It is a case of sorting out the mass production issues and scalability of LEP's. This seems to have been taking a long time, possibly because plasma's and LCD technology has had the focus. Once the production issues are sorted out, then LEP's will trounce any exisitng forms of visual entertainment hardware.

I go to many sites where crack'd /software=gen ..is norm

here I talk normal people .. (some stupid .lol)
these lcd are they the touch liquid ones , an what I hear if you dont pay 5k any less your finger print on screen remains for hours/days .... ? true/ false ....??

Im doing my nut at the moment an I seen some cracking furniture in Argos ... lol

UUUUURGH ..Hmm..

False.

I use TFTs more than CRTs nowadays. The only CRT I have regular contact with is my living room TV.

I have winced many-a-time as people point to something on my TFT at work or even *shudder* my own TFT at home... with their finger PRESSING AGAINST THE SCREEN.

Not had any residual fingerprints, ever.

thanks for that buts a think people do .. ..faced with big tv .. hand crawl across ... too see if the pixels stay ??

Sorry .. just me .. an my elderly old fella in Currieres .. the clawes ..lol.. lol..lol..lol

The things that puts me off replacing my 15 year old (yes 15) CRT with a nice spangly LCD are :-

a) They are still coming down in price quickly as more manufacturer's dump CRT technology.
b) The old one refuses to give up the ghost, despite harsh treatment :D.
c) The LCD's look easy to knock over and the screens are fragile, which is not ideal with 3 young 'un's (wall mount not really an option)

Apart from that if the damned thing turns it's toes up soon then it's off to spend the bonus (payable in may 2006!!)
