Could the lead on this photo (from the internet) be made to hug the tiles and the steppings much tighter or is it a nightmare to do ?

Plain tiles with soakers don't need a cover flashing as in the picture . A neat stepped flashing is all that's required. Back gutter looks iffy

OP,
what type of tile or slate are you thinking of working on?
The pic you say is from the internet - well its a poor job. A very poor job.
The front apron area is missing a batten and tiles, and the roof pitch seems to change(photo?) - it will leak.
The apron upstand should have gone in the bed one course above, and could have returned at the stack corners - the stepped flashing could have been wrapped around the corners.
The apron cover should have been spread wider.
The back gutter is a dogs dinner - well wrong. Ita a possible run-off leak.

Nothing in leadwork is "a nightmare to do" if you know what to do. Bossing lead is a case of slowly moving lead from one place to another - you dont hammer it into shape or position, you carefully boss it using a bossing stick.
