Hi I am new to this so please bare with me, i have recently had new double glazing installed with square lead, the lead on the inside glass has quite noticably been cut short is this right? i thought the inside lead should reflect the outside. the fitter came today to have a look and said that as long as they were within 3mm they are passable he was quite unfriendly about it. i went into a few shops to have a look and didnt notice any that looked like mine, is there anything i can do and is the 3mm limit true, thanks

Yes it sounds about right.

You are correct that the outer lead goes right to the edge but if the lead in the cavity did then the spacer bar that seperates the two glass panes would sit on the lead and cause the unit to be ever so slightly too thick, it would also have sealing implications and may break down prematurely.

The glass shop usually cut the inner lead back 12mm from the edge of the glass and then they centralise the spacer bar in between the two panes before clamping and sealing with hotmelt or 2 part polysulphide.

Its normal for the lead to be a little short of the bar, id say 3mm is about what i've seen but any more then its clearly a friday afternoon job rush job ;)

some of mine are about 5mm and i can notice it if i stand back from the window, so if it is a 'friday rush job' what are my options?

5mm is excessive to be honest and if you can't live with it and you eye is drawn to then speak with the DG company but im not sure if theres any set guidelines from FENSA or the GGF they have to work to regarding cutting the lead, more of a free for all.

Speak with them and ask for them to be replaced

ok thank you for your help, hopefully they will do something about it.

cheers

If it was my business and i fitted a unit like this then i wouldn't argue with you, i'd of bought the unit in so it'd be remade FOC by the glass shop i use, so maybe your DG company although might make their own windows they might buy their in units so would get them remade at no cost to themselves.

Its worth a go :D
