Lead or iron waste and water pipes

Can anyone help me with this I need to change a very old sink that has an iron or lead waste outlet and the same for the water to the taps. The house was built in the 1880\\\'s so the sink and bath outlet goes to a hoper type soil pipe. I assume I can change the waste to plastic and the water pipes to copper is there any legal stuff i need to consider.?

Legally -Just don't solder lead water supply pipes.
Practically - you can get yourself in bother if the pipes are brittle lead.
For outside, are you in a conservation area?

Hi Chris How can I tell if they are brittle lead? I was thinking off using a compression fitting to convert it to copper or maybe replace the whole pipe I need to check the connections to the water tank.

I don't think we are in a conservation area but their is something, why do you ask.
