Help!!!!

I had a local oddd job man fit a new bathroom suite for me yesterday. and today I have had to:
1) put a new push fit flexi pipe to hot water on the bath as the crimp on the one that he had used was leaking

2) replace waste on bath room shink as that was also leaking

3) replace doughnut on close couple toilet as that was leaking ( although that still appears to have a very slight leak, have tighten wing nuts one more turn (I was advised not to tighten too much as prone to cracking pan)

and now I have just found that the the toilet waste is leaking, I have used some plumbers glue ( he left a pot behind) on it and it is still leaking, it is slightly off set and goes into 3.5 cast iron. trouble is I couldn't get an offset reduced coupling so I had to get a 3.5 - 4" straight and then an off set pan connector. When he fitted it yesterday he cut the 3.5 straight slightly short and said that it wouldn't matter as at least half the fins were inside the C.I. how do I stop this from leaking do I have to go and buy a new one?

I already have to redo some of the 90° on the feed as they are leaking through the back nuts.

would've been easier and £100 chepaer to fit it myself.

 close to tears pen pusher

Hi,
God how strange! Almost the same thing here! My dad has fully tiled the floor and walls in bathroom, but i kept the original suite (still quite new) but i just replaced the taps. My Dad is very, very good at plumbling however!!!!
1) Leak on soil pipe connection (slight drip)
2) Leaking cistern dripping through wingnut(think this is where i put a new cistern handle on after Dad finished, the bloody thing was moulded and had to hacksaw it off! (reckon i have caused the cistern leak!!)
Yesterday i too have bought another doughnut washer but i havent yet told my Dad!
3) Had problems with the new sink waste (a crappy one) and kept getting a leak on the black plastic thread underneath. Turns out that the washer wasnt that tight and was letting by on he overflow hole Now fixed with an extra washer and silicone!
4) Dad came back yesterday to fix slight leak on hot sink tap iso valve. One turn and it seemed ok. 5 hours later oops its doing it again. Think that needs another turn.
How unlucky is that? My Dad has just renewed all his own suite and a friends no leaks, no probs, ME, well i am always the UNLUCKY one!
I have yet to phone my DAD, but i feel terrible!
Hope that makes you feel a little better about yours, and that you are not alone!!! lol.

Regards,
Lorraine ;) ;)

Very simple, get your local not-so-handyman back. If he can't do it, get a plumber in to fix it, and send him the bill.

Or ask Kev really nicely if you're in the NorthEast

No idea, I also have no idea why they are trying to fix someone else's mess, when they actually paid good money to get in this situation. I know what I'd do

I wouldn't have him near my house again, that's why I haven't called him back.

I went to a national plumbers merchant near work yesterday and had a chat with them.

they sold me the correct fittings for the toilet waste, so I refitted that last night and now have no leaks from there!!!! I also replumbed the toilet cistern, direct of the mains feed. I did however have a few slight bubbles after I done this, went to B&Q and had a chat to the "plumber" and I had used the PTFE in the wrong place I had put it on the male thread rather than the olive ( like I said earlier, I am a pen pusher)

QUESTION

I still have a very slight leak from the wing nuts of the close couple cistern ( about one drip every minute) the wing nuts are tight the doughnut is new and rubber not foam that came with the suite. any ideas on how to solve this?

the basin waste is 1½ standard white waste which goes into old waste pipe dia unknown using the original push fit connection, that also has an occasional bead of water dripping from it, how do i solve this?

thanks.

p.s this is an excellent site, lots of my previous questions on various other bits not plumbig related were answered by reading these forums[/code]

I have solved this by putting larger washers onto the rubber cones and then tightening the wing nuts onto it. :D

Trooper won't approve though.

Try it

The leak may be coming from a badly seated syphon, so tightening the wing nuts will not solve problem.
Check that plumbers mate has not been used on the rubber washer inside the cistern as this can cause the syphon to move slightly when flushed also check tightness of backnut on syphon unit.....I know this means dismantling but hey its better than cracking the wc pan...

Thanks Vince,

It would appear that the "fitter" didn't use a washer behind the back nut so consequently it was lose, this is where the water was coming from.

I have learnt a very expensive lesson this time around, I should've believed in my own ability and done it myself.

Thanks to everyone that has posted on this thread much appreciated

:D
