Leaking cross gabled roof

I noticed a small but persistant leak on one side of the main roof span just beside the gabled section. During the storms this has spread and I now have a few wet loft beams on both sides of the main roof (not the gabled section) next to the gabled section. Is it likely the leak is above the gabled point and running under the felting to find a way inside? Also is there an easy way to locate a leak like this? Is it acceptable to remove the felt from the inside to locate the leaking point?

Even if you do cut the felt you may not find the leak, and if you do its unlikely you will make a worthwhile repair from the inside. if you can post some pictures it may help.
