Leaking downpipe on flat roof extension through main downpipe inside garage

My daughter's house has a flat roofed garage. The main downpipe from the house roof runs down the side of the house and into the garage, then underground within the garage. The surface water on the garage roof runs into what looks like a cup affair that then somehow runs into the main downpipe. This has begun leaking, with the rafters becomming sodden during the last few weeks' rainfall. Does anyone know what type of drain system it is, I just dont know what to search for to see how it works (or rather doesnt at the moment).
