Moved house - trying to plumb in washing machine. Bought new cold hose from Homebase. when hose connected to both machine and mains, water leaks from joints when tightened by hand. Tried a wrench to make joints tighter but still not water tight. I have tried to put rubber washers in but makes the problem worse. Any ideas?

If that doesn't work then try some PVC? tape (very thin white plasticy tape) round the threads you're connecting the hoses to.......available from all good plumbing outlets and B&Q ;)

The tape mentioned above is called PTFE. Should be available from the plumbers. A better one, considering its for water, would be Loctite 55. It is similar to PTFE but comes wound in a tube, and is like a waxy thread. Its designed to work with water

Make sure when you put the PTFE on, you wind it on clockwise, and you do not put excessive amounts on.When making the hose connection back on you do not cross thread the joint.
