Sorry, stupid question time. I have recently noticed a large damp patch in my front garden surrounding a pipe which leads from the bath and the roof area before going underground. I noticed it after I had been away for a night so I had not used the bathroom that recently. I have not noticed any damp inside (fortunately) Is this likely to be a serious problem requiring expensive repairs?

The pipe in question sounds very much like your rising main. Are you saying this pipe is fitted externally before entering the house  ?

More info reqd as there may be other issues that need dealing with.
However, you do need to find out exactly where this leak is coming from.

Do some digging around. :D

What size is this pipe, and what is it made of?

Can you see the overflow pipes coming through the wall from your WC cistern and cold water tank, are they anywhere near?

Surely this is a soil pipe?

ellens - can you tell us the colour of the pipe, the approximate diameter, and whether it's plastic or metal?
