The sink in my bathroom is connected to a the main soil pipe via a rubber strap boss which has recently started to leak for some reason (noticed by a big stain on the ceiling downstairs). I gained access to it by lifting some floorboards and found the rubber part to be pretty loose (slides in and out very freely). I've never seen one of these before, but I would have thought the fit should be very tight.

I can't easily remove the pipe, as there's a joist right next to it which blocks the pipe from coming out. I could potentially remove the strap in the hope that it gives more flexibility, but it would be very difficult, since it appears to be held together with a screw at the bottom and I can barely get my hand inside, let alone a screwdriver. Even then, I'm not sure the pipe would come out.

I've tried pressing everything together tightly and wedging it with a piece of wood to see if it helps, and it did reduce the leak significantly. I let the water run and gave it 24 hours of normal use and the next day after letting more water run for a few minutes, checked again. There was a tiny bit of water towards the bottom of the join. Minimal, but definitely fresh.

I did consider pulling the rubber bung out as far as possible and packing in-between the rubber ribs with a waterproof silicone or similar, though it would feel an absolute bodge job :cautious:

I'm just wondering if anyone here has any alternative ideas/experience?

Strap Boss should have been glued to the pipe, assuming that was done properly, it isnt coming apart without destroying it. Ever.

Rubber Boss Adaptor is replaceable, but how the hell you are going to get it out is another matter. Worst case scenario, wrap some Denso tape around it, (filthy stuff, wear disposable gloves and clothing!), I would try some sealant first, but give it chance to cure before letting any water through.

The strap boss itself does look glued to the pipe and feels solid, no water seems to leak from it. Between the bung and the white waste pipe it seems well sealed too.

The leak appears to be coming from between the strap boss and the rubber bung that fits into it (the ribbed part). It feels quite loose, at least it slides in and out very freely, as shown in the video.

I'll try that, let it fully dry, apply some sealant (silicone?) between the rubber ribs and give it 24 hours.

I've never heard of Denso tape, will look into that too, as a backup option. Thanks!
