Lean To Roof - Concrete Posts ?

Guys,

I am just about to swap an old wooden fence that is situated between two driveways, the idea originally was to put in slotted concrete posts with the usual gravel board between and fence panels, but was thinking I may as well put a lean to roof over the driveway while I was at it, usually lean to's are supported on metal or wooden posts, is there any way or is it possible I could use concrete slotted posts to support the roof on, therefore keeping the gravel boards and keeping the panels slotted in nicely and still looking a fence so to speak bit with the added bonus its supporting the roof, just an idea at the moment, all ideas, comments, welcome.

You'll have to knock up some sort of timber strut arrangement on (up) the post, and timber beam to take the eaves will depend on the span between posts.

Yeah was thinking along those lines, just need to be careful when attaching to the concrete posts, those things tend to crack easily.

I wouldn’t, i’d build the fence then the carport with proper metal legs a bit further inside your boundary so the gutter doesn’t overhang the fence.

I've just drilled a few posts to prop up my boundary fence while I dig my extension foundations. The horizontal timbers and the diagonal struts are all screwed and plugged to the posts:

I didn't get any cracking (started off with a 5.5mm SDS bit) but did hit the steel when drilling away from the centre.
I would probably drill the holes before installing the posts (if it does crack you won't have to dig it out) and have a practice on a part that will be in the ground first to establish where the steel is.

Ian H - good point about the gutter, the drive isn't the widest, so was trying to avoid putting metal posts in front of the fence. One for thought though cheers.

That's why you would use timber struts fixed to the posts - in the slots or on the face, there are normally some holes. Then load is transferred to the whole post, not just the top few inches.

As for the gutter, if you design it so the eaves beam is on the inside face of the posts or set in a bit more, the gutter will be over the top of the posts. That's the principle.

Cheers woody, will do a spot of measuring, don't want to attach to face of post as space is limited already when a car is in place, will look at the slots.
