Learning Flash

I want to help my daughter develop her IT skills and have been told that writing flash codes is a mighty impressive thing for her to get into.

The question is, what compilers are there that are easy for me, er, her to start off with and how do I then get to see the fruits of our labour ;)

Flash can't be used on Apple devices so will not work with Iphone. So many have left flash behind and are using cascading style sheets and java script.

Java both script and straight Java is often used by copying codes some one else has written. No point in reinventing the wheel. The same applies to CSS.

However Visual Basic, and Java are very similar most Microsoft stuff biased on VB or at least VBA and the Sun stuff like Open Office are Java Biased.

As a kid I would buy a mag and carefully copy the code to play the new spectrum game. Today we have moved on and as a result kids don't learn the basics.

However from time to time we still need to fall back on the hand written program. I met a forest owner who wanted to promote his ideas and to do it I wanted to show a presentation with pairs of pictures with text.

There are programs like SV-builder which will produce a java script program to auto show ones pictures. But one at a time. So after many years I looked into how I could write a page to show what I wanted. Not as easy as I thought but this Free the Forest was what I ended up with.

Click on tools/Web Developer/Page Source and you can view the code used. I have written notes on the code to remind me what each bit does. Some bits I don't fully understand specially the CSS for pull down menu but I have worked out enough to make it work.

I would not say what I learnt about flash was useless. Using Pictures to Exe to make presentations I realise it uses very similar commands to flash. And it seems as one looks at many of the languages and systems one sees the same idea repeated.

The for next loop in VB is not the same as the for else loop used in java script but still similar and once soon picks up the differences. I took a course access to HE in IT. After doing it I took my degree in Electrical and electronic engineering but the stuff taught in that IT course was A1.

Yes taught flash. I had to produce a rocket which left earth and landed on the moon to music. Would not have a clue on how to do it now. But when I came to use Pictures to exe it was so easy as following same general rules.

Don't teach her Linux as once she gets into that no pass word set on PC will help stop her looking at stuff on your PC. If she is anything like my granddaughters then all you need to do is give her a PC she will find how to use it all too quickly.
