I’m planning to construct a ceiling in the garage. I’ll be attaching a ledger plate with concrete screws or resin bolts to use joist hangers. The board has to “straddle” the gas pipe and electrical cable/conduit. It will be where the red line is marked in the photo. Can I notch the timber in 2 places around them so it’s one continuous length or can it be constructed in 3 separate sections? Planning to use 45 x 120mm timber but will need to notch out 35mm so doesn’t leave much meat if it has to be one length.

The current storage shelf on the right is coming down so ignore that and the ceiling will replace this with the ledger board running to above where the strimmer is hung in the photo.

Thanks in advance.

I would do it one piece, much stronger and no complication of lining up 3 separate pieces.

Quicker too, a couple of notches is just 5 mins work

Thanks for the quick reply. I was leaning towards it being one length but not sure if “notching” like this is an accepted practice/solution.

Yeah notching like that is fine, but put in screws as though it’s 3 pieces, ie 6 screws (maybe 5 given position of notch on right)
