LED's/downlighters in stairs or in side of stairs in skirting area? Im having a runner fitted shortly, do you think the lights in the stairs each side look naff? Would it be better to put them in the side or is this alot of work?

If you want the Saturday Night Fever look, a mirrored ball and a multi colour spot lamp would be better .
On a more serious note, if you must have stairs lighting it needs to point from the side, mid height between treads, to illuminate the stairs and your / hers / their feet.
The runway (like plane aisle emergency lights in the floor) look will date, has dated and does nothing to add value to a normal property. If yours is a gleaming steel, architectural blot of design for the 22nd century I apologise and I'm sure it will suit the property.
Most LED kits come with a set of lamps, a transformer and cable. How difficult are they to fit ?
Well that depends on the kit and the state of the stairs build, the switching requirements (two way switching, top and bottom of stairs ?), where you intend to connect the power from (lighting circuit or fused spur via ring main) and where you need to place the transformer(s) for future service needs.
