If you are wanting to set a datum line then a laser will do that or there are many mechanical methods of levelling around the room.

I'm a plumbing and heating engineer. I would usually just batten. I'm just sure I saw a U tube video once with a white plastic tape that was unable to bend therefore run a perfectly level line around a room. Maybe I dreamt it
