Hi all,

Probably a straightforward question but I've never had a need to do it so don't know the answer.

Currently we have a standard stairs lighting arrangement of a light at the top and bottom, a double switch at the bottom that does both lights then a single switch at the top that allows you to turn the landing light off once upstairs.

Can the single switch upstairs be replaced with a dimmer switch?

Our daughter still requires a light on at night but a full bulb is too much, currently we use a lamp sat on the landing but that's only whilst building work has been going on and isn't a long term solution, a dimmable light should work I just don't know if you can have a dimmer switch in a dual switching setup?

yes, i have done this but many years ago - before LED , so the type of dimmer maybe important , not sure which is best - sure others here will make suggestions for that
it needs to be 2 way
what type of light is it controlling - The LED bulb also needs to dimmer-able , a lot are not

I'm aware that led bulbs need to be compatible with dimming, we haven't got a light yet so I can make sure it will be suitable

i'm sure others here will have links to specific items
OR maybe talk to someone like CEF , if in your area , they have been good with me in past at a few stores in the south UK
OR TLC , again very knowledgeable over the phone

I have a smart bulb on our landing, so can dim it at night. Easier to fit than a dimmer switch, and with my Nest Mini's around the house easier to control, 'hey google landing light 50%' works well.

I would say sit back and think about the future, what you may want in the fullness of time. My wife needed her knee done, so we turned the dinning room into a bedroom, so that she could turn the light on/off from bed, I got a TP-Link light switch 1725353402829.pngand remote button 1725353443384.png I already had the hub, switch worked well, but the button not used as she used voice control, it was re-used as a door push. If only one bulb then at £10 easiest option is bulb 1725353674086.pngthe button shown can be configured turn it and up/down and push it on/off, but they allow so much more, my living room lights turn on at dusk, my landing light turns off at 1 am, the list goes on, but each make tends to have there own hub, so as I have said some thought is also needed.

I have zigbee, Tapo, and Energenie, the Tapo (TP-Link) light switch used AAA batteries, so no problem with no neutral at the switch, it can switch PIR controlled outside lights, not a problem with bulbs shimmering, or staying on dim, but control from a PC is poor, from phone, tablet or speakers is good, but to dim means using smart bulbs. The Zigbee is used by many makes, so is more universal, but not found battery powered switched that use it, battery power means not altered by power cut as well.

In general a smart bulb will switch off with a power cut, so flicking switch off then back on again will turn off lights, a simple bulb with remote Lampandremote.jpg can allow dimming and colour changing with ease, no need to use phone.

The problem with any electronic switch other than Tapo is either it needs a neutral, or there is a compatibility chart showing what bulbs will work, with a dimmer even harder to match bulb with switch, so with my Energenie light switches, I have ended up swapping bulbs around to find ones which will work, had problems with smaller bulbs (G9) with a shimmer and staying on dim, needed to fit load-capacitor.jpga load capacitor to get them to switch off, and now I have a draw full of bulbs which will not work with the Energenie switch.

So living room 8 bulbs, so smart switch, craft room 4 bulbs, so smart bulbs. You can get remotes, the Lidi one, Lidi-remote.jpg allows me to switch and dim zigbee bulbs, the energenie one Remote control.jpgonly turn on/off, I use latter in my bedroom, wife has a remote, but uses voice commands, personal preference. I had the remote in mothers old house to turn off extruder alarm, used to know when mother had gone on wheel about (in wheel chair).

I have fitted a chandelier on my landing now, DSC_6799.jpg and used a smart relay so can select centre, outer, or all lamps, and the centre also a smart bulb so can change colour Centre_bulb_colours.jpg I am trying to give you fuel for thought, rather than saying copy me. I also have a high socket with an emergency torch which will turn on automatic with power cut, or if dark as one walks past it, slowly loosing use of fingers!

There are slave/master dimming switches one example here 1725357754849.png, another here 1725357843197.png I would draw your attention to this VARILIGHT instruction sheet some dimming switches the dimming can only be controlled on one switch, other switches are simple on/off, and I will admit with my dimmable bulb, it needs switching on, before I can adjust the amount of dimming, using phone app, again have to switch on then dim, but using voice control I can say hey google turn on billy bookcase at 50% and it seems to work.

Leave the Two Way switching as it is.
Install a (possibly, dimmable) "Night Lite", for the benefit of your Daughter.

How you do that is another question.
Plug-in lights on Socket-Outlets come to mind.
They can be "Human Proximity" (Body Heat/Infra-Red [IR]) activated.

A plug in light is possibly another good idea, there will be a socket on the landing, I just don't want a lamp and cable kicking about on the landing all the time

You can get plug in night lights, this one comes on automatically at dusk. We have one on the landing and one in tha hall
