Hi all, first post so just want to say thanks in advance for your help.

I've just moved into a new house and am currently boarding/insulating my loft. I will be putting in a light which by itself is no problem but the lighting circuit is not like i have seen before and just wanted to know if it is safe/legal etc...

I have one cable running to a large junction box with choc strip inside from the consumer unit and all lights come of this like a spiders web. 1 cable to the light and 1 cable from the light to the switch.

When adding the loft light can i just add it to the large junction box.

Hope all that makes sense.

Cheers

This is an old way of wiring up lighting circuits. It's ok, as long as this junction box remains accessible (e.g. in the eaves of the loft space).
They still wire up lighting circuits this way on the continent - often with accessible junction boxes in the walls! And yes, you can add your new light to it, as long as there's room in the terminals and you're not exceeding the maximum load on the lighting circuit.

Providing the cables are earthed, and you can work out what does what, then you will be ok to connect here.

Put up a photo on here if you are not sure.

Thanks guys (or gals?) If i can take the feed direct from this box can i go straight to a switch with the live and connect the two Neutrals in the back of the switch box, all earthed too of course?

Cheers
