Hi guys,

Recently moved into our 'new' house, built in 1935, but has been extensively DIY'd by the previous owner.

In the downstairs hallway and upstairs landing there is a lighting set-up that I can't get my head around......

Down stairs:

1-gang, 2-way switch - 1 x 4-core (Red/Blue/Yellow/Earth)

2-gang, 2-way switch - 2 x 4-core (Red/Blue/Yellow/Earth), 1 x 3-core (Red/Black/Earth)

1 light fitting

Upstairs

2-gang, 2-way switch - 2 x 4-core (Red/Blue/Yellow/Earth), 1 x 3-core (Red/Red/Earth)

1 light fitting

There doesn't seem to be any logic in how they are all wired up!

Is it possible to have this set-up? and if so, how should it be wired up?

If people need more info such as the colour of the wires going to the light fittings, I'll see what I can find out!!

First of all, what is you're trying to do?

BTW it's not 4 core, it's 3 core & earth.

Seems like you have 2 normal 2-way circuits, 1 for each lamp, but not sure why you should have a seperate 2-way switch, what are there locations & is there yet another light somewhere close by? The 3 core & earth cables should run from one switch downstairs to the other upstairs & the 2 red & earth cable & the red, black & earth cable should take the supply to the switch & onwards to the fitting. See the wikki for 2-way lighting circuits. //www.diynot.com/wiki/electrics:lighting
