Hello Sixtheighth-when you say lime putty,do you mean lime plaster made with putty?.If so then I would scud the smooth stone with 1 llime putty 2 rough sand and allow to dry fully prior to plastering ..
I think so - it's bagged stuff, ready mixed, recommended by a local lime mortar specialist for patching lime plaster on lath. I'm a complete novice so can't tell you which it is.
I used to see scudding with a really wet mixture - should I be adding lots of water to the lime/sand you suggest? I do have some 'finishing stuff' left in a tub and wondered if that would do the same job?
If it is already pre mixed in a bag, then just mix up a small bit until its a bit runny and flick it on to the brushed and dampened[not wet]surface.I use a small coal shovel for this using a FAST backhand flicking motion. You dont need a thick layer-just a splattering, that when dry provides a better key than the smooth stone.Too wet and it will slide down, too dry and it wont stick.
